What is Zioptan?
Zioptan is a fluorinated analog of prostaglandin F2alpha ophthalmic sterile preservative free solution.
How Does It Work?
Zioptan is a selective FP prostanoid receptor agonist which is thought to reduce the intraocular pressure by increasing uveoscleral outflow.
Reason for Using Zioptan
It is indicated for the treatment of open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension by lowering the intraocular pressure.
Contraindications for Using Zioptan
There are no contraindications other than known sensitivity to the ingredients in Zioptan.
Precautions for Zioptan
Zioptan can cause an increase in pigmentation of the iris, eyelids and eyelashes. This increase in pigmentation is most likely permanent in the iris and may decrease over time on the eyelids and lashes.
The eyelashes increase in length, pigmentation, thickness, shape, and number of lashes. The changes in the lashes are reversible.
Zioptan should be used with caution in patients an active ocular inflammation such as iritis and uveitis.
Cystoid Macular Edema
Macular edema has been reported with the use of F2alpha analogs. It should be used with caution in aphakic patients or patients with increased risk of developing macular edema.
Zioptan has not been studied in pregnant women and therefore should not be used unless the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
Zioptan has not been studied in nursing women and therefore should not be used unless the benefits outweigh the potential benefits.
Zioptan should not be used in children.

Conjunctival hyperemia or redness 4% – 29%

Administration and Dosage
Zioptan is used as one drop instilled into the eye or eyes at bedtime. The maximum effect is 12 hours after instillation. The remaining contents in the dispensing unit should be discarded after use as the sterility cannot be maintained after it is opened.
How is Zioptan Supplied?
Zioptan is supplied in a single-use 0.3 mL eye drop dispensing container and does not contain any preservatives. It comes in cartons containing 30 or 90 dispensing single use containers. It should be stored in the refrigerator. After opening the foil pouch it may be kept at room temperature.
