Blepharoplasty is the name of surgery performed on drooping eyelids. It has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for both women and men. It returns a more youthful, bright, and healthy appearance to the eyes and face. It can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids. The upper eyelid surgery is much more common.
Blepharoplasty Covered by Insurance
Many cases of blepharoplasty are covered by insurance as the drooping eyelids are diminishing or causing a loss of side vision. The doctor will do a side vision test and will repeat the side vision test with the eyelids taped out of the way. If there is enough improvement in the side vision with the eyelids taped out of the way, then the procedure is considered medically indicated. Also photos will be taken to document the condition of the eyelids. Medicare has set guidelines for the surgery and if you meet those guidelines then the surgery is covered. Private insurance companies may require pre approval before the surgery. If the testing does not show enough impairment, then it is considered cosmetic.
Eye Exam and Preparation before Surgery
The doctor will examine your eyes to check your vision, health, and medications you are taking. A complete list is important especially aspirin, blood thinners, anti-inflammatory medications, and vitamins that may affect bleeding during the surgery.
