What is Pred Forte®?
Pred Forte®1% is a topical anti-inflammatory drug for ocular use.
How Does Pred Forte® Work?
Pred Forte® is a glucocorticoid that has a 3 to 5 times the anti-inflammatory potency of hydrocortisone. Glucocorticoids inhibit the edema, fibrin deposition, capillary dilation, and phagocytic migration of the acute inflammatory response. It also inhibits capillary proliferation, deposition of collagen, and reduces scar formation.
Reasons for Use of Pred Forte®
Pred Forte® is indicated for the treatment of inflammation of the conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior portion of the eye.
Side Effects and Precautions for Pred Forte®
Prolonged use of corticosteroids may result in elevated intraocular pressure causing glaucoma and permanent loss of vision. Patients should have their eye pressure checked if they are on the medication for 10 days or more.
Prolonged use of corticosteroids may cause posterior subcapsular cataracts.
Prolonged use of corticosteroids suppresses the immune response which can lead to secondary ocular infections. Fungal infections should be considered in any corneal ulcers while using this medication.
Corticosteroids may cause corneal and scleral thinning and should be used with caution in patients who have a thin cornea or sclera.
Other ocular infections may be masked by the use of corticosteroids.
Corticosteroids may cause an outbreak of herpes infections and make its course more severe.
Elevation of intraocular pressure with possible development of glaucoma and vision loss
Posterior cataract formation
Systemic side effects of corticosteroids are very rare with ocular topical use but still need to be watched for
Corticosteroid use has been reported to cause anterior iritis or uveitis and perforation of the eye. On occasion keratitis, corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis, loss of accommodation or focusing, drooping of the upper lid, development of viral infections
Temporary burning and stinging after instillation, blurred vision, foreign body sensation, and allergic reactions.

Pregnant and nursing women should not use Pred Forte®
Administration and Strength of Pred Forte®
Pred Forte® 1% suspension should be instilled into the affected eye or eyes 4 times per day or as recommended by the eye doctor. The bottle should be shaken before using.

Pred Forte® is supplied in ophthalmic dispensing bottles of the following sizes:
1 mL in 5 mL bottle
5 mL in 10 mL bottle
10 ml in 15 mL bottle
15 ml in 15 mL bottle
