What are Dry Eyes?
Dry Eye Syndrome is a chronic eye disease characterized by a decrease in the tear film on the surface of the eye. The incidence of dry eyes is approximately 20 million Americans or more. People with dry eye syndrome or dry eyes complain of burning, watering, red eyes, itching, scratching, grittiness, foreign body sensation, pain, lids stuck together in the morning, and blurred vision.
The Use of Artificial Tears for Dry Eyes
The mainstay of treatment in dry eye syndrome is the use of artificial tears to replace or add to the deficient tear film present on the surface of the eye. Artificial tears may be used one or two times a day in mild cases and every hour in more severe cases.
There are a large variety of different types of artificial tears on the market produced by several different companies. The ingredients in the artificial tears differ as well. The companies have formulated their artificial tear products to match the necessary components of the natural tears on the eye. The artificial tears vary from a more watery form, thicker gel drop form, and an ointment artificial lubricant applied on the eye at bedtime.
Bio-Logic Aqua tissue-culture grade of water is the only ingredient in Nature’s Tears Eye Mist. Tissue-culture grade means the water is suitable for use as a tissue-culture medium in laboratory experiments. Nature’s Tear Eye Mist is a hypotonic low osmolarity water that is slightly acidic (pH 6.4) and contains minerals that are biocompatible with the tear film. Patients with dry eye syndrome have an increased salinity and osmolarity of their tear film.
Advantages of Nature’s Tears Eye Mist
Older patients have difficulty instilling eye drops onto their eye due to decreased vision, arthritis, problems squeezing the eye drop bottle, keeping or holding their eyes open when instilling the eye drops, and other problems. Instillation of the Nature’s Tears Eye Mist doesn’t require holding the eyelids open or aiming the eye drops so that it lands on the surface area of the eye.
