What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration or AMD?
The macula is located in the center of our vision in the retina which is located inside the back portion of our eye. The macula provides our vision for all fine detail such as reading, driving, watching TV, and etc… You can only reading or see something clearly by looking directly at it. As we age the cells in the macula degenerate and blurred the vision. There are two types of macular degeneration dry and wet.
Dry Macular Degeneration
The cells in the macula slowly degenerate over time as we age. This is usually a slow process that takes years of time.
Wet Macular Degeneration
Wet macular degeneration occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow into the macular causing damage to those cells. Wet macular degeneration can rapidly cause loss of vision. The earlier in the development of wet macular degeneration it is diagnosed, the better the results of the treatment. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of dry macular degeneration converts to wet.
An Amsler Grid is typically used by patients for monitoring the status of a person’s macular degeneration as it is important to catch any development of wet macular degeneration early.
The ForeseeHome AMD monitoring program provides frequent monitoring of a patient’s macular status from home. It is designed to detect and analyze central and paracentral visual distortions or metamorphopsia in patients with age-related macular degeneration. ForeseeHome Monitoring System
The ForeseeHome monitor uses a patented technology called Preferential Hyperacuity Perimetry (PHP).Hyperacuity or Vernier acuity is the human vision system’s ability to see or perceive minute differences in the relative spatial localization of two objects in space. The human brain is able and vision system is able to detect 3-6 seconds of arc which is 10 times more sensitive than standard visual acuity.
The patient checks their vision once a day with the ForeseeHome Monitoring Program. A series of targets are flashed on the screen. Each target appears as a dotted line. You use the mouse of the computer to move the cursor to the area of the screen where the target was shown and click the mouse where the line appeared distorted. Some targets may not have any bump or distortion and appear as a straight line. The targets may be horizontal or vertical. Data points will be checked multiple times to make sure that you are accurate in placing the spots on the screen. The test takes about 3 minutes per eye and then transmits your results to the Notal Vision Data Monitoring Center. Your doctor will review the results and will notify you if there are any changes so that may be seen early before more damage is done.
