Hello! Welcome to Case of the Day. I’m Dr. Croley and today we’ll make a little shift. We’re gonna show you actually a lot of the equipment that sits on the eye doctor’s clinic that we use to examine your eye.
There’s a lot of new things, new technology, so we are going to give you a little bit of an idea, of what new things we have. The first thing that we are going to do is show you a machine called the Lens Star. This machine is designed to examine your eye, and measure your eye to finite detail to determine the strength of an intraocular lens that would be used during cataract surgery. So we’ll give you a quick glimpse. This is the equipment here. Then on the computer monitor, it will then examine your eye, a list of lenses and powers that will then give you a great result on needing very little glasses or no glasses after cataract surgery. So this is a great instrument that we use for cataract surgery.
Now we’re gonna turn around and look at what’s called a Tracey Technology Lens. Tracey is a system that examines your eye and does a wavelength evaluation of your eye and we use this for one, for Lasik procedures; this is a great tool, ‘cause it does wavefront. Also, we use this for cataract surgery, as well, because this gives us all kinds of information, about corneal toricity and the shape of your eye, and any aberrations in your vision system. This is able to pick those up. So, this is too high tech, new instruments that are great technology that provide high technology type information as far as an eye exam or preparing you for a surgical procedure.
Next, we gonna go to another room… In this room is a brand new piece of equipment, and this is called a LipiFlow and a LipiView. This equipment is the first ever FDA-approved treatment for dry eyes. So on this side we have a machine connected to the large monitor and we actually show people their tear film, the composition of their tear film, and this lets us evaluate what’s missing in your tear film. Instead of just treating generally speaking a dry eye problem here’s some tears or RESTASIS and that’s it, we can get down to the specifics on what’s missing in your tear and then specifically customize a treatment for what’s wrong with your tear film. So, this is the examination or view part, LipiView part that examines…
This machine over here is the actual treatment machine. This is the first ever FDA-approved treatment for dry eyes. So, people who have significant deficiencies in their lipid layer which is called meibomian gland deficiency, then we treat them with this machine, and better than 80 to 90 percent of the people; we can make a tremendous difference on how their eyes feel. So great new technology.
Also, I’ve a little machine over here that is a tear-eyes molarity, where we can actually measure the salt level on somebody’s tear, and so it gives us readings of what their salt levels are and tells us how dry their eyes are.
Ok? So now we are going to another room. As you can see we have a lot of different kinds of equipment that do great things in examining the eyes. In this next room, we have equipment and this is called an OCT machine. So the OCT machine is a device that is able to scan a retina or optic nerve area, for either glaucoma or optic nerve disease and or for macular degeneration and this gives us high resolution imaging. So we are able to detect minute disease or detail, such as macular degeneration or glaucoma.
This other is an old machine, so now it’s an old machine. This is an old visual field machine. We still use this for evaluating people who have extra skin on their upper lids to see how much is blocked in their side vision. If there is enough blockage of your side vision, then insurance will, or medicare will pay to have your lids fixed, so this is the machine we use that for.
We are going now to another room, which is high tech information. This is a brand new, a little bit noisy machine, but brand new, and will let you see, scan and let you see the monitor. This camera is able to take almost a whole retinal view in one image. Amazing technology and it lets us examine the eye in different ways, different filters. You can see the different images that this pops up. It’s great technology! This sort of scans through different eye diseases that pop up. This is someone who had severe diabetic retinopathy, who had laser treatment to their retina to try to save their vision. But you can see how much of the retina area you can see in one view, with just a regular lens we can see only a small area at one time so this gives us great advantage in finding new diseases.
Then on this side, we have a piece of equipment, this equipment measures the inside lining cells of your cornea for things like Fuch’s dystrophy. It helps us pick up whether there are abnormal cells on the inside lining cells of your cornea. So this is able to take that kind of detail of just the cell layer inside your cornea.
So we go now to the next room. This is a modern version of the visual field machine. We use this to test a variety of different eye diseases, glaucoma, different neurologic problems, optic nerve diseases. This gives us an examination with a computerized system that measures your whole peripheral vision even with your central vision. You push a little button when you see the light. This is the newest, latest machine on that.
Then we have over here, another device. This device measures the ocular blood flow through your eye. So people who have glaucoma will feel that a lot of the reason for damage from glaucoma is that the pressure is restricting the blood flow through your eye. With this machine we were able to measure how much blood flow you have, whether it’s normal or abnormal. If we find someone with very low or poor blood flow, then we know we gotta get the pressure still lower to keep them protected from glaucoma. So great piece of equipment.
So, now we’re gonna go to a regular exam room. So this is a pre-classical, typical exam room. This is a slit lamp. So with a slit lamp is a microscope with a light on it, and with this we are able to examine the front of the eye, and use a special lens and even examine the back of the eye. So, this classically you put your chin in this machine and we look at your eye with a microscope. Then we have a piece of equipment that goes in front of your face that has all the lenses in it, inside of it, and this is what we come up and use to get your glass prescription, so you say which is better, one or two, and that is called a phoropter, and that’s how we do glasses.
And there’s the other Tracey Machine, will do that without doing these, and it will give us a pretty accurate glass prescription, as well. And then just typical other equipment, this we now have electronic medical records, so everything that we do in the office is recorded and put into electronic medical record. So you can see we have a lot of different kinds of equipment. There’s still other tests that are available that can do other things as well, so you can see that when you go to an ophthalmologist’s or optometrist’s office, there’s a lot of technology there to give you an unbelievable examination, accuracy, finding diseases, and treating diseases, better than we ever did before.
