Hello. I’m Dr. Croley and welcome to Case of the Day. Today we’re gonna discuss a case that is sort of a sad case.
A young girl comes in today after going to a store or filling station and buying a pair of these halloween contact lenses. Now, it’s actually against the law to sell these contact lenses in stores or gas stations outside of an eye doctor’s office because there have been so many injuries related to these contact lenses that we actually got a law passed so supposedly, they’re not supposed to be able to sell those outside of an eye doctor’s office. And the problem that happens is that, a lot of times these people who buy these contact lenses don’t know how to take care of them, how to insert them, how to disinfect them, which has been a huge problem because there have been many cases of people who have either lost an eye, had significant scarring to their eye from a corneal ulcer from these, have scratched their eye or done different things.
So today, we have this young person who came in and the lenses probably didn’t fit very well and she don’t know how to really take them in or out and she scratched her cornea. And now she’s in severe pain and I think she’s gonna be okay. But this is just something that didn’t need to happen because she could have gone to an eye doctor’s office and there are lenses that do have those different patterns and designs that are of reasonably good quality that you can wear if you wanna do that. But then you need to have to learn how to take them in and out, how to disinfect them, which is extremely important because you don’t wanna put a contaminated lens in your eye because it is you who are taking a huge risk.
So this happens all the time around Halloween because these contacts become very popular at this time of the year. You see them on movies all the different sci-fi shows when the actors wear these contacts but they wear them under supervision of an eye doctor. So if you’re thinking about doing so, do not go out and buy these contact lenses. And like what I’ve said on top of it, it is against the law for them to be even sold that way because you want to protect the health of your eye. There has been too many complications and accidents from these things.
So if you have any questions about Halloween-type scary contact lenses, you can always contact us through the website and if not, then may God bless you with healthy eyes and great vision.
