What is Besivance™?
Besivance™ is an 8-chloro fluoroquinolone with a N-1 cyclopropyl group.
How Does Besivance™ Work?
Besivance™ inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. DNA gyrase is an essential enzyme required for replication, transcription, and repair of bacteria DNA. Topoisomerase IV is an essential enzyme required for partitioning of the chromosomal DNA for bacterial cell division.
Reasons for Use of Besivance™
Besivance™ is indicated in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. In clinical studies patients were dosed three times per day for five days. Clinical resolution occurred in 45%. Microbiology outcomes showed a statistically significant eradication of bacteria of 91%.
Side Effects and Precautions for Besivance™
Approximately 2% of patients reported conjunctival redness
Besivance™ is not to be used while wearing contact lenses
Besivance™ is for topical ocular use only
Besivance™ should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits justify the risks as there are no well controlled studies in pregnant women.
Besivance™ should be used with caution in women who are breast feeding
Besivance™ has not been studied in infants below one year of age
Other Patient Counseling Information
Patients should avoid touching the tip of the eye drop bottle in order to avoid contaminating the tip.
Patients should discontinue the medication and call their doctor if there is any sign of a rash or allergic reaction.
Patients should use the medication exactly as prescribed as not following the direction may have a significant effect on the effectiveness of the medication.
Patients should shake the bottle before applying the medication.
Administration and Strength of Besivance™
One drop into the affected eye or eyes three times a day for seven days is the recommended dosage.
How is Besivance™ Supplied?
Besivance™ 0.6% is supplied in a 7.5mL bottle filled with 5mL of medication.
