The Tacit Project is a hand mounted Haptic Feedback Sonar Obstacle Avoidance Assistance Device. The device measures the distance to objects or things and then translates the distance to that object into pressure on the wrist. The device is mounted on the wrist. Steve Holder at Grathio Labs developed the Tacit Project.
How Does the Tacit Project Work?
The wrist mounted device senses objects from 1 inch (2cm) to 10 feet (3.5m). The response time of sensing the distance to an object is a fraction of a second. The Tacit device is designed to help visually impaired or blind people navigate more efficiently out in the public environment and at home. Since it is mounted on the back of the hand and wrist, it does not prevent the person from using other assistant devices. The device is easy to learn to use and the person can quickly use the device to sense the distance to an object by the degree of pressure on the wrist. The user can point the Tacit Project device in any direction to sense the distance to any object.
The Technology Behind the Tacit Project
The Tacit device uses ultrasound similar to the ultrasound used by depth finders used by people fishing so they can see the depth of the water and identify fish and ultrasound used in the medical field such as ultrasound during pregnancy or measuring the eye prior to cataract surgery to determine the strength of intraocular lens to be inserted into the eye.
The sonar is connected to small servomotors with cushions on the ends which are used to apply variable pressure on the wrist.
The Tacit wrist mount is made of 3mm thick neoprene and is held in place by a Velcro strap which is easy to apply.
Where can you Purchase the Tacit Project Device?
You can order them through the developer but there is a limited supply. The plans, instructions, and everything needed to make it are available for free. If you are unable to complete the Tacit Project, you can try finding an electrical engineering student at a local school to help. You can download the Tacit Project plans from http://Grathio.com .
The Tacit Project is a device developed to help visually impaired or blind people navigate their world in a more efficient manner. Hopefully some company will find the Tacit Project worth it and make the Tacit Project easily available so that the visually impaired or blind people can purchase the Tacit Project.
