There are many causes for irritated, red, inflamed, and itchy eyes. The most common causes for irritated eyes are Dry Eye Syndrome (dry eyes) and Blepharitis.
Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry Eye Syndrome symptoms include dry feeling, eyes stuck together in the morning,
irritation, foreign body sensation, scratchy, sandy, redness, intermittent blurred vision, watery, and sensitivity to light. The tear film on the surface of the eye is composed of three layers:
Mucous inner layer
Water or fluid middle layer
Lipid or oily outer layer
Main Causes for Dry Eye Syndrome
Loss or Decrease in the Lipid Layer
The outer oily layer is responsible for covering and keeping the middle liquid layer from evaporating off the surface of the eye. The lipid layer is produced by the Meibomian Glands located in the eyelids. Loss or decrease in function of the Meibomian Glands is the major cause of dry eyes. The glands become plugged and are unable to secrete their lipid layer material onto the surface of the eye. This leads to evaporation of the liquid layer of the tear film off the eye leading to dry eyes.
Decreased Production of the Watery or Liquid Layer
The middle liquid portion of the tear film can be reduced by a decrease in the production of the fluid. This can be related to several diseases and/or chronic inflammation.
Blepharitis is due to an infection and/or inflammation of the eyelids especially the margin of the eyelids. The areas of the eyelids where the eyelashes are located become red, irritated, itchy, and the eyelashes have crusting around them. The Blepharitis can be chronic in many people if left untreated and many people may need care for their blepharitis forever. Blepharitis can contribute to the development of dry eyes. The chronic inflammation of blepharitis can lead to Meibomian Gland dysfunction and dry eyes. Treating the blepharitis can resolve the red irritated eyes and can help prevent the development of Meibomian Gland dysfunction.
Moist Heat Compresses
Moist heat is applied to the eyelids for several minutes first thing in the morning. The heat helps with the healing process for blepharitis. It loosens the crusting on the eyelashes so that the lids can be cleaned after the heat is applied. The heat also helps with stimulating the Meibomian Glands to function at a better level and produce more of their lipid material. The moist heat can be applied with a wet warm wash cloth.
