Vision Monitoring Grid for Macular Degeneration and Other Diseases
The Amsler Grid is a graph of lines that can be used as a vision monitoring system. The purpose of the Amsler Grid is to detect an eye condition or disease and is used to monitor any changes in the status or condition of an eye disease. Amsler Grids are most often used in patients with macular degeneration.
Macular Degeneration and the Amsler Grid
Macular degeneration is a disease in which the cells of the retina located in the macula degenerate. The macula is responsible for our clear central vision that we use for driving, reading, watching TV, and etc… There are two types of macular degeneration dry and wet. The dry type usually progresses slowly over time. About ten to fifteen percent of the dry type turns into the wet type of macular degeneration. The wet type can rapidly lead to significant loss of vision or legal blindness. There are treatments available for the wet type of macular degeneration and early diagnosis is important in order to preserve vision.
Amsler Grid Use
The Amsler Grid should be used should be used daily by patients with macular degeneration. Many patients have it taped to their refrigerators or bathroom mirrors.
Amsler Grid Test
If you need glasses to see clearly up close, put them on for the test. The grid should be located about fifteen inches from your eyes or a normal reading distance.
Cover one eye at a time and check each eye individually.
Stare at the black dot in the middle of the grid.
While starring at the black dot, check to make sure that all lines are straight, no blank or missing areas, distorted, or blurred areas.
If there are any abnormal areas when using the grid for the first time, draw a line or circle the abnormal area with a pen or pencil, and use a new grid for the second eye.
If you see any abnormal areas or if there are any new abnormal areas, you should call your eye doctor immediately. This could be a sign that your macular degeneration may have changed from the dry type to the wet type. If you have the wet type, it could mean that the wet type is progressing.
The Amsler Grid is a simple easy to use chart to follow the status of your vision and the health of your eyes. You should use the grid on a daily basis and call your eye doctor if there are any changes.
